Soft Landscaping

Plants are what brings a garden to life. If you’re enthused about creating a garden full of colour, scent and structure, our in-house garden designer Katie Thomas has the horticultural expertise you need to bring your vision to life.

  • Have you recently moved to a new build property with a ‘building-site’ style garden?… and don’t know where to start?
  • Perhaps you have an established garden, but need some advice on a particularly troublesome area – or a planting plan for a new raised bed?
  • You’ve seen plants and gardens that you like, but not sure what will work in your north/south/east/west-facing garden?
  • Or as with many of our clients, you might be after creating a planting scheme that looks good but doesn’t require huge amounts of maintenance…

We’re here to help! Whether it is a simple plan for a raised bed or an overarching planting scheme for a large garden, Katie’s horticultural knowledge means that plants are specified for the conditions and situation of the area in question – given the best possible success rate. Together with a degree in garden design, Katie has a natural affinity with plants and loves creating unique planting combinations. Her hand-holding approach – both as regards your likes/dislikes and also after-care advice means that you won’t be left floundering!

Many thanks for all your work on the plans and… in executing those plans for our garden. We are both very impressed and pleased with the way the garden has turned out and the constant surprises as plants bloom and become more established.

Soft Landscaping: HOw We Work

In everything we do, we strive to start off by listening. Our approach is very much a hand-holding one – we’re here to discuss, brainstorm, suggest, explain, advise… Here are a few pointers on what to expect.

  • Initial Consultation
Whether you are undertaking a complete garden re-design, or simply commissioning a planting plan for a new border, we will sit down and discuss your garden, ideas and any likes / dislikes in terms of style, colours and specific plants. We’ll also take into account how much time you’re likely to have for maintenance.
  • Detailed Planting Plan
A full and detailed planting plan is created, showing old and new plants and their precise locations. Katie’s horticultural knowledge means that plants are specified for the conditions and requirements of your garden – giving the highest possible success rate and optimising display.
  • Presentation of Planting Plan
A plan is one thing, understanding and visualising a plan is another! Presenting our planting plan to you gives us an opportunity to explain our ideas in detail, and gives you a chance to ask questions. This collaborative process provides space for discussion and allows us to make alterations as needed.
  • Planting Schedule
We also create a planting schedule, detailing each variety, quantities and suggested pot size. This is used to provide an indication of overall planting cost.
  • Sourcing and Planting
Plants are sourced from reliable local nurseries where possible, to ensure the best quality plants. Any unusual varieties are sourced from specialist nurseries as appropriate. Plants are usually set out and planted by our in-house team to ensure the right positioning and planting best-practice is followed – giving your plants the best start possible.
  • After Care Advice
If you’re not one of the world’s green-fingered people, Katie will be only too happy to advise on looking after your new plants – how often to water, when to prune, what to watch out for and more.
