Granite paving and circular patio areas in Woolton Hill

ALDA in Action

Granite paving and circular patio areas have transformed a recent ALDA Landscapes project in Woolton Hill!

Our client’s brief for our designer Katie Thomas was to create better access from the house, opening up the lower patio to the upper lawn area and to create more sociable spaces within the garden.

What we did

… the garden became more accessible from the house by significantly widening the steps up to the lawn. Instead of the original narrow steps which felt enclosed, we installed a beautiful wide curved series of steps. The steps not only deliver on a practical level more than the original steps, they have also become a feature in their own right. They were constructed using the same granite paving as used in other areas of the garden.

… Katie designed a large circular patio area to the right of the steps. This is now a perfect space for our client’s garden furniture and a good entertaining area. Again, the patio has been built using the same granite paving and edged with a brick perimeter which makes the circular lines stand out even more. A curved brick bench built into a low wall that curves off the bank of the lawn cleverly mimics the contours of the paving and makes a good place to sit and view the garden looking down towards the house. The bench is finished with a topping of granite pavers.

… a new granite paved pathway was installed which runs from the path down the side of the house following the gentle incline of a slope, continuing along the edges of the lawn in front of the house and following the curved line at the top of the steps before bringing you to the circular patio space. This pathway is particularly useful as a step-free way of accessing the upper levels of the garden – ideal for a wheel barrow.

… we also laid new granite paving along the patio just outside our client’s kitchen – the grey of their floor tiles linking these inside and outside spaces together.  Two new granite pathways have been installed along both sides of the house creating good access to the front and back garden.

… we created an attractive new approach to the front of the property by laying an area of granite paving smartening up this space and tying in the front garden with the back.

The outcome

Our client has already used his new patio areas for entertaining family and friends and is very pleased with what they describe as the ‘Mediterranean feel’ it has brought to the garden. The finishing touches will be Katie’s new planting design for the borders which will consist of purple and white splashes of colour against a background of green foliage.
