ALDA in Action

January was a tough month for the ALDA team – continuing to work through both the freezing conditions and the heavy downfalls, and despite the odds still managing to complete a stunning garden project ready for spring – a garden update in Woolton Hill. The new patio area makes a huge difference to the overall look and feel of this property and greatly improves the practicality and usability of the patio and garden.

Take a look at at this before and after slider, to see the changes:

Our Client’s Brief

The brief was to create a clean contemporary space which would provide a calm and relaxing environment for our client to enjoy and entertain in.

The Garden Before:

Before we started, the patio was quite dark and in need of an update. The area directly in front of the patio doors didn’t have much space for seating.

Design Features:

The ALDA team have designed and built a bright new garden area. Here are some of the key design features:

A New Resized Patio

  • The main patio was removed and redesigned to balance the size of the two spaces, making them more suitable for use and improving the flow from one to the other.
  • The patio directly outside the house was enlarged to allow more seating space.

New Contemporary Materials

  • The new paving is used on the patio and steps and it works to unify and modernise the whole area. The steps now lead up to the garden from both sides of the patio.
  • We used porcelain paving in ‘Modena Sand’ and sourced from our supplier, Nigel Belcher (email: info@nigelbelcherstone.co.uk; tel: 01635 202700).
  • The effect is light and contemporary.

Rendered Walls and Cleverly Placed Plant Beds

  • Pale rendered walls have replaced the tired looking existing brick walls and tie in with the colour of the new paving.
  • Plant beds have been placed around the edges of the patio and within the patio itself. The planting, once established, will soften the edges of the patio and bring colour, texture and movement to the area.

A Built in Seating Area

  • A composite deck built in seat adds to the minimalist style and will provide extra seating when entertaining.
  • Placing plant beds around the seating area will help to create an inviting sense of enclosure once the new plants are in place and have established.

A New Pergola

  • Another feature of the design is the new treated softwood pergola on the left hand side of the patio.
  • The planting beds in this area are ready for beautiful climbing plants, which will cover the pergola.
  • The pergola adds height and interest to the design as well as providing some shade for the summer, once the plants have grown up.

Before and After:

Here’s another before and after sliders to show what a difference the new patio area has made:

The Result:

Our client is delighted with her newly landscaped garden and is looking forward to the finishing touches that the new plants will bring in the coming weeks.
