A Steeply Sloped Cold Ash Garden
A steeply sloped Cold Ash garden is transformed with terraced beds and a series of wide sweeping steps.
The Garden Before
Our client was not able to make the most of their large lawn due to it’s steep slope. The sloped area could not be used for planting, furthermore access to the bottom of the garden was steep with no clear pathway. Our Garden Designer Katie’s challenge was to create a practical garden with beautiful spaces throughout.
Before and After
Here’s an advance preview of what our team have achieved, showing the garden before and after…

New Design Solutions
Our client was delighted with the beautifully designed steps, slopes and pathways which make the most of their interesting multi-level garden. There are lots of planting spaces throughout to bring colour, texture and interest throughout the year. Here are some of the key features of the garden:
Multi Terraced Beds
- Multi terraced beds were installed into the slope using softwood treated sleepers laid vertically on top of a concrete footing.
- The beds were lined with a waterproof membrane and topped up with a grade A topsoil. They have been left ready for the planting, which will take place in the next couple of weeks.

Two Curved Pathways
- Two curved pathways provide access to the lower sections of the garden. They run from the top of the garden, curving around the lawn and finishing in a zig zag pattern on the lower patio. For easy maintenance they have a surface of self-binding gravel.

Our client chose an ideal time for carrying out the landscaping, and now the sunshine has arrived their garden is ready to enjoy throughout the spring and summer. (The ALDA team might slightly disagree, as it took place during the weeks of relentless rain, and conditions became very muddy, excavating and moving large quantities of soil in the early stages of the works!!) There is just one job left to do and that is the planting; once complete, our client will be able to sit back and enjoy seeing the plants bed in and flourish through the warmer months.
