Our Client’s Brief:

To create a garden with a modern minimalist feel, which makes the most of the space available as well as complementing their office building and requiring very little maintenance throughout the year.

Firstly, let’s have a look at some photos before and after the garden construction:

Work in Progress:

Here are some photos of the work in progress: the retaining walls around the patio and acer tree are being constructed using bricks, followed by vertical cladding and porcelain tiles.

Garden Design Features:

As always, quality of workmanship and attention to detail has been key. The result is a garden which has been finished to a very high standard with impressively clean lines, that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

A number of design features came together to make this garden a successful minimalist style garden:

Angular Lines

  • Angular lines throughout the design help create the contemporary feel. These are found in the straight lines of the retaining walls, the vertical cladding and the large patio area across the back of the house.

A Contemporary Fence

  • A very contemporary dark fence encloses the space and makes a striking feature in the garden.  It also provides contrast with the other materials such as the pale grey paving, the office building and the grass.
  • The fence was built by the team using timber effect Millboard cladding in ‘Burnt Cedar’. This has been laid horizontally, and attached to a bespoke timber frame behind.

Porcelain Tiles

  • Large pale grey porcelain tiles in ‘Modena Smokey’ are an ideal choice for a contemporary style patio. They look good against the dark tones of the Millboard cladding fence, and the Millboard vertical cladding of the retaining walls.
  • Continuing the sleek minimalist look, the walls have been topped using the same porcelain tiles as the patio surface.

A Feature Tree

  • The beautiful existing acer has been highlighted as one of the main features in the garden by framing it with a perimeter low edging wall built with the same grey porcelain tiles.
  • Spotlights have been sunk into the vertical boards inside the steps to lead you up to the top area of the garden once the sun goes down.

Artificial Grass

  • An area of artificial grass, like a carpet, has been laid flush to the paving and will provide colour throughout the year, as well as being low maintenance. This is a good choice for those of us who have allergies or hayfever and there are now multiple ‘greens’ to choose from.

Before and After:

And to finish, here are a couple more ‘before and after’ sliders looking back towards the house to show the changes that have taken place. And we have to say – we’re delighted with the finished result!
